Pfizer's Japanese unit announced Tuesday that it will start marketing generic drugs in Japan as early as 2011, as the company looks to diversify its operations. Additionally, newly appointed Pfizer Japan president Ichiro Umeda noted that once its Japanese operations are combined with those of Wyeth, the drugmaker will market more branded products in the country and increase the number of sales representatives from the current 2009
.

Hiroshi Matsumori, head of Pfizer Japan's established product division reported that the company will expand its line-up of off-patent Pfizer-brand and generic drugs from the current 68 products, and that more details of the plan, including "when and how many products will be sold," would be detailed in the new year.

He added that Pfizer could lower the cost of its products by sourcing them through tie-up partners and relying on a non-visiting detailing method.

The Japanese units of Pfizer and Wyeth are scheduled to complete their merger during the first half of 2010.
