AstraZeneca announced Thursday that European

regulators approved the antipsychotic Seroquel XR (quetiapine) as an add-on treatment for patients with major depressive disorder who failed to adequately respond to other antidepressants.

The decision follows a positive recommendation by the European Medicines Agency's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use in April.

The drugmaker said it would now seek local approvals for the product in European markets.

Seroquel, which had second-quarter sales of $1.4 billion, is already approved for this indication in the US.
