Pfizer announced Tuesday that the FDA accepted for review its oncology compound axitinib for the treatment of patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in patients who have not responded to other drugs.

The application is based in part on results from the late-stage AXIS 1032 trial,

which found that axitinib extended progression-free survival by 6.7 months,

compared to 4.7 months among patients treated with Bayer's Nexavar (sorafenib).

Earlier this month, Pfizer filed for EU approval of the drug in the same indication.
