The World Health Organization said Thursday that isolated cases of drug-resistant

influenza A (H1N1) in the UK and US probably do not signal a change in the virus'
susceptibility to Roche’s Tamiflu (oseltamivir).

Since the emergence of the H1N1 pandemic virus, the WHO has been notified of 75 cases of Tamiflu-resistant viruses. The organisation’s chief adviser on pandemic influenza, Keiji Fukuda said that further investigations are needed into the two latest clusters in people with compromised immune systems, which were discovered recently in hospitals in Wales and in North Carolina.

He commented that "what it points out is there needs to be a lot of vigilance…but it probably does not have big implications for the overall pattern of spread or the overall patterns of illness in the general community." He added that Tamiflu was effective when used correctly and early.

In addition, Fukuda said it is too early to say if the northern hemisphere is experiencing peak influenza A (H1N1) activity, and he remarked that WHO officials expect to see more infections in the coming weeks before they see a downturn.
