Roche and Genentech reported that Avastin (bevacizumab
in combination with docetaxel and prednisone, did not meet a Phase III study's primary endpoint of extending overall survival in patients with late-stage prostate cancer, compared with docetaxel and prednisone alone. The drugmakers said the study will be submitted for presentation at the ASCO annual meeting in June.

The announcement follows Phase III results released in February from a late-stage study of Avastin in advanced gastric cancer, which showed that Avastin did not meet its primary goal of extending overall survival, compared with placebo. However, the drugmaker also reported last month late-stage findings in advanced ovarian cancer showing that Avastin increased progression-free survival, compared with chemotherapy.

Commenting on the impact of the prostate cancer results, WestLB analyst Oliver Kämmerer said he would likely lower his 2014 sales forecast for Avastin from 9.8 billion francs ($9.3 billion) to around 9 billion francs ($8.5 billion). Kämmerer explained that he revised his forecast given that he believes ovarian cancer is the only new opportunity that remains for the product. Avastin had global sales of 6.2 billion francs ($5.9 billion) in 2009.

Hal Barron, Roche's chief medical officer, remarked that "patients with hormone-refractory prostate cancer are in urgent need of new treatment options. It is unfortunate that the study did not meet its primary objective."
