Johnson & Johnson reported Wednesday that it is in talks with regulators in five countries after trace amounts of the fungicide TBA (2,4,6 tribromoanisole) were found in five lots of its HIV drug Prezista (darunavir). The company said the discussions were started with agencies in Canada, the UK, Ireland, Germany and Austria, following four consumer reports of an uncharacteristic odour, which the drugmaker later determined was likely caused by TBA.

Johnson & Johnson indicated that talks with the European Medicines Agency led to a recall at the wholesale and retail level, while discussions with Canadian authorities are ongoing. The company said that it does not expect a product shortage due to the actions as fewer than 2000 affected bottles are estimated to remain on the market in the affected countries.

A small number of temporary gastrointestinal symptoms have been linked to products contaminated with TBA, although the drugmaker said that patients taking Prezista have not reported any serious adverse events due to the presence of the fungicide. The company is currently conducting an internal investigation to determine the source of TBA.

Johnson & Johnson has recalled a number of other products due to the presence of TBA, including last month's voluntary withdrawal of a number of lots of Topamax (topiramate) in the US and Puerto Rico. Since early 2010, the company has recalled more than 300 million bottles and packages of medicines, including its pain treatment Tylenol, due to manufacturing issues.
